Purplicious
by Elizabeth Kann & Victoria Kann
Our little Pinkalicious girl is back! This time she is expressing her love for the color and getting a hard time for it from the other kids at school. “Don’t you know, pink is passé?” She tries to give up pink, but it’s so boring. In the end she meets another little girl who just couldn’t do without pink, because with it, one can make purple! And be purplicious!
I liked the first book, Pinkalicious, but this book did little for me. Granted that in school there is peer pressure to be “cool”, but I was disappointed that with so much potential for a sequel, it had to deal with that. Though I like how the illustrations are done it bothered me that the girls from school all wear black, teenager type garb. How old are these girls suppose to be anyways? The story does have a nice ending, Pinkalicious finds a friend and realizes it’s okay to be who she is.

I bought this book for my 4-year old daughter because she loved the original Pinkalicious book, which is wonderful. Luckily, I read this one before reading it to her as she would have been horrified. I have no idea why the authors chose to present peer pressure in this manner as there are many other ways to deliver their intended message. Peer pressure is hard enough without the added influence of reading about it in books supposedly written for young girls age 5-8. I will be returning this book today.
